"100"

Here at OCC we are proud to rub shoulders with some of the sketch card super-collectors. In a new series of blogs, we will be welcoming these collectors to write a piece about their collecting experience, with some pictorial examples from their beloved collections.
Today we warmly welcome super-collector (with a very keen eye) David Yosikawa as our guest blogger. David collects all things Alien/s in the realm of sketch cards, and has amassed a formidable collection.
David Yoshikawa:
"100”
“100 what?”
"100 cards, that's the number I figured when I was a kid. 100 sketch cards and you could consider yourself a legitimate collector. You need them for experience. To develop an artistic eye. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being a collector and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then, after, you realize that's what you are." — parody of scene from Knockaround Guys
Parody aside, my experience with collecting anything is about limits - whatever the number you choose for yourself. It’s about sacrifice. It’s about pain. You could look at the money as a sacrifice. In that, you would be right. But the self-restriction, the requirement, having to choose, to cull from your precious cache of cards before allowing yourself to obtain another. That cost is what brings sharper focus to collecting for me. It makes it more fun than just going into hoarding mode and grabbing as many - in my case Alien cards - as I can.
Dominic and OCC have become a dear friendship in introducing me to new opportunities, friendships, and bantering as fellow fans of the art.
So here I am at one hundred Alien sketch cards. Lucky to be here. And already it’s begun. The vying, kicking, shrieking by those at the lower end of the stack to decide which dons the red shirt. Not one of them wants to be last in line. The first to go. Replaced by the new Jones kitten in the box brought home to ‘oohs' and ‘ahhs' that were once their right.
Happy collecting everyone!

@Nine time 9 – You know it.
@Ian – You gotta buy me dinner first (haha). I’ll probably show some more in a future entry if I get that chance. The collection is still quite fluid.
When do we get to see the rest of the collection?
Ghofur’s attention to detail is gaining my attention. This guy is awesome.
@David – You know how to make a store manager go all rouge. R.e.s.p.e.c.t. to you, sir.
@OCC – “E.. T.. A.. Six-teen minutes!” Dom, you’re the one that’s introduced me to some really great artists. A really pro shop you have, sir!
@Omar – And one of those great artists is J(ay) a.k.a. 10th-letter. He does some really wonderful work. Those two personal sketch cards are super examples, but he has so many more. Check him out on deviant art. And thank you for your comment!
